The Raposa & Millar Piano Studio offers programs of study in piano and music theory to15-20 students in Mississauga, Ontario. It was founded in January of 2017 by Lisa Raposa and continues into its third full year. Most students receive instruction at St. Stephen's-on-the-Hill United Church and occasionally in homes nearby.
From the early through advanced levels, students are encouraged to explore the beauty of music. They develop a solid classical foundation through the works of master composers both past and present, technical exercises, and additional studies in sight-reading, theory, and aural skills. All current students are guided through the curriculum set by the Royal Conservatory of Music with chances to play music for piano four-hands, popular tunes, and other pieces according to their natural interests and abilities. Those who are studying in levels Prep A through 10 or equivalent, are given a detailed practice booklet to bring to lessons and track their progress at home. At the more advanced levels, students are expected to manage the flow of their practice. In doing so, they take ownership of their progress and learn what it takes to achieve successful results.
In 2019-20, students will again have opportunities to perform at Port Credit Residences in November and at Steinway Piano Gallery - Mississauga in May for the annual studio recital. A holiday party is scheduled for December (which last year also included special performances by the Jones family brass quartet!). Performance classes geared towards preparation for RCM exams will be held in the winter and spring of 2020 based upon student need and interest. Details about these events may be found on the calendar page of this website.
Additionally, students are invited to participate in area festivals as well as recitals sponsored by the Ontario Registered Music Teachers' Association (ORMTA). In the recent past, students have performed in the Peel and Milton Music Festivals. More information is available via the GTHA Music Festivals and Piano Lessons tabs on this website.
